Games I like

A list of my favourite games

I've recently been getting sucked in to terraria as well, since it's something I can play on my laptop during uni or on the train.

Team Fortress 2

My main game ever since I began gaming on a PC. A primary school friend came over and made me a steam account and installed the game onto my family computer so I could start playing with him. Since that day I got infected with the TF2 mind virus and kept playing. I knew about the memes and was watching goofy sfm animations before I started playing the game. Every time I try to quit the game, I end up coming back to it later (sorta like osrs). It really has a way of bringing someone back with a mix of nostalgia, or something the community puts out. TF2 youtube had a bit of a renaissance a few years ago with the likes of elmaxo, Emesis Blue, et cetera. RT Game and Jerma985 really got me into it, and I still watch both all these years later, but the community somehow keeps bringing in new creative people and it always manages to draw me back in.

The game's in a bit of a sad state right now with the bot crisis and such (and worse than I thought considering the infamous zesty jesus video), but its still a lot of fun if you avoid casual matchmaking, especially if you live in AUS. There are only a few populated community servers here so you'll probably catch me playing on that ctf_doublecross server or on uncletopia.

UPDATE: Valve just did a massive bot ban wave and casual has been playable for the first time in years! I've still mostly been playing on community servers though because I recognise the people there (and all of my silly mods work there), but so many more people can enjoy the game! This is great news (especially for Australian players) because casual has been completely unplayable.

Config

I use mastercomfig to take care of all my customisation, since I got tired of trying to manually tweak things in my own config. I use the medium high preset (because that's all my aging PC can handle :/) with no tutorial, null cancelling, flat mouse, and disable pyroland.

I also use a mod which disables explosion smoke and effects because if you're on a crowded 32 player 24/7 2fort server the game becomes impossible to play lol. I don't know where I downloaded it from (some mod on gamebanana probably) because I installed it a long time ago, but vorobey's config video has a script which does the same thing (with the plus that it will definitely work on sv_pure 1 servers).

HUD and Mods

TF2 Mod List

Right now, I'm using DeerHud. It's a cute pixel art kinda hud with a health and ammo position that I really like, as if someone read my mind and made the perfect hud for me. Also... cute animated deer on hud.

It recently got a massive customisation update as well!

And a heart crosshair ❤️.

Also cute crit icon :3.

My hitsounds are a jerma yay, and a jerma byeah (i'm not obsessed with him or rt i swear it's just a cute sound).

In terms of other mods, I've found some really cute mods by Sapah (especially their character model replacers). I especially liked their pyro sharkie, medic synth, and sniper drone mods, along with the shark themed axtinguisher sign.

I also like the bisexual festive lights mod which replaces the regular festive light colours with the bi pride flag bi pride colours! (the antler band remover from the same creator is also great)

I wanted a fox scout, so I found this great mod which replaced the batter's helm. It's a great mod, especially because the tail has jigglebones physics and is able to flow with your movement! I messed around with the files a bit and got it to work with the head prize (my normal cosmetic).

P.S. If you want to play on skial servers with your mods, they want you to upload it to mods.skial.com. You upload the mod as a zip/vpk file, and the site will spit out a signed vpk that you can put in the regular tf2 mod directory. There's a thread about this on their forum.

Here is my gamebanana account btw.

Celeste

Probably my favourite game if I was forced to pick. Discovered it in a weird time in my life, and with the message of the game and the really special soundtrack, it ended up having a massive impact on me. I can't really divorce the game itself and that part of me, so it ended up kind of being a formative piece of media in my life and it will continue to mean a lot to me as long as I continue to struggle with anxiety. Anyway, enough about me.

The game's soundtracks are, imo, my favourite in any game I've played, and you should definitely give them a listen, or better, play the game, because they really blend with the environment and gameplay like no other game I've played. You can find all three albums (A-side, B-side, and Farewell) on Lena Raine's bandcamp page.

The gameplay is practically perfect. Madeline feels great to control, and is very responsive. Out of all the platformers I've played, Celeste feels the best. It really feels like Madeline is an extension of me, and controls naturally. I never felt like I wanted to do something, and it didn't work due to the game's controls or physics. They really nailed the core mechanics of the game and so it feels amazing to play.

The design of the game itself is also really great. I never really felt genuinely frustrated while playing Celeste, which I wasn't expecting when picking it up (because I'll be the first to admit I'm not very good at games). Celeste does a lot to set expectations when getting into it that you will die a lot, and makes dying and trying again as smooth of a process as possible. When you fail a screen, you immediately pop right back in. No dramas, and no consequences other than an opportunity to try again. Celeste is also really good at slowly introducing concepts, and ramping up difficulty over time so that you aren't suddenly hit with a super difficult challenge that you don't feel like you don't have the skills to overcome. Over playing the game, I really always felt that there was a way forward, so I didn't really feel unmotivated to face the next challenge, or felt lost. So I was able to complete the A, B, C, and eventually Farewell – a massive jump in difficulty – while being guided and slowly introduced to the required skills over natural gameplay (barring the cute slideshow in Farewell). I did this with probably more deaths than the average player, but had a lot of fun the entire time!

Mods

I just started modding celeste and I've been having a lot of fun playing the Strawberry Jam Collab. It's a massive mod that adds 5 massive lobbies with 111 new maps in total (essentially self-contained chapters), with each chapter bringing their unique spin or mechanic to the game. It also has its own original soundtrack by many different contributing artists from the community available on bandcamp. Each lobby gets more difficult (from beginner all the way to grandmaster), with each lobby teaching you the required techniques to complete it in a special 'gym' stage. Everything is really nicely explained, so if anything this acts as a great teaching resource! Don't feel intimidated to try it out as a lot of the levels are around A-side difficulty. As mods go, this really has to be as good as they come in quality and care.

The Foxeline skin is pretty cute.
